Even with its controversial grille it manages the task with more pleasing, chiseled styling than the bulbous X. The 2022 BMW iX is aimed at the very same active, affluent buyers as the Tesla Model X. But whether the iX is a better electric vehicle than the Tesla Model X-with its excellent battery efficiency and hassle-free charging across America-it’s too soon to tell. It is also a capable semi-autonomous vehicle, a delightful long-distance cruiser and the perfect weekend Costco-then-soccer runabout.īased on a day-long drive on 250 miles of twisty Alpine roads and unlimited-speed Autobahns, my first judgment is this: BMW has built a better vehicle than Tesla. The iX is fast, quiet and handles superbly well for a 5,530-pound SUV. The iX midsize SUV is far more than a BMW X5 with electric motor swapped in for a gasoline engine. The 2022 BMW iX is the first mainstream vehicle from the German automaker engineered from the ground up to be an electric vehicle, and it’s poised to give Tesla’s Model X some real competition. The large kidney grilles, a source of internet controversy on every new BMW, are the iX’s most polarizing feature.
